Lou's Nesting Box Tantrum

Three of the four nesting boxes were full and Lou was not happy.  Why she couldn't use the fourth nesting box is a chicken mystery.  Her squawks and squeaks were likely heard around the neighborhood.

Red Door Coop Pen...and a visitor

We had a young visitor yesterday.  She got to see the chickens exploring their pen for the first time this year.  The grown ups were vigilant in keeping her fingers out of the pen!

Scratch Time

Last evening the girls were especially squawky during scratch time, their snack before chicken bedtime.  I looked in on them from the coop.

Community

I feel energized by the community of librarians with whom I had the pleasure of spending a week in Florida, touring libraries, schools, museums, and (!) beaches.  The members of our organization are from all over the United States and Canada and they all work in Independent School libraries like me.  I miss them.  Times like these are when I appreciate our online community so much.  We can visit daily even with thousands of miles between us!

Home now to Red Door Coop, I dove into the community of the hens.  Yesterday afternoon I spent some time just being quiet and still in the coop.  Here is what I saw.

Variety

If you you live in Colorado you know that it only takes fifteen minutes for the weather to change.  While Mama Hen was in the Tampa Bay area this week for a conference, Papa Hen and the Red Door Coop hens woke up to winter.

When Mama Hen returned four days later, it was spring.  Our baby Autumn Serviceberry trees are blooming.

Whirligig Plus

Let's get up close and personal with the whirligig.

The Purple Mountains Majesty.
 The Chicken.
 The Horseback Riding Friend.
Little Red, The 1975 Cardinal Love Bird Trailer.

This thing was spinning like crazy in the evening wind today.  One big blur.
That's all folks.

Whirligig

Mama Hen's Mama and Papa collaborated on a new piece for Red Door Coop.  It's a customized whirligig.  The decorative wind whirligig features a camper (an exact copy of our Little Red), a chicken that resembles Weezy, a woman on horseback, and the beautiful purple mountains majesty.  It celebrates things that we love.

Here are a few pictures from the end of the installation.

We'll have some close of views soon.

What a masterpiece!

Thanks Mom and Dad!

Chicken Snacks

The chickens enjoyed a sunny afternoon snack time.  They are having some yogurt mixed with cooked, crushed eggshells.  Their dessert is a little fresh spinach and carrot peels.  The chickens had a nice couple of days earlier this week with Papa Hen ruling the roost.

Easter Party

Sunday started like this.

And continued like this.

Dirtbath Friday

Papa Hen was home last Friday.   He spent some time improving the dirt bath in Red Door Coop by raising the sides.  This will prevent the chickens from kicking and flapping so much dirt out of the bath.

The chickens like it very much.

BB seemed a little confused.
But bossy Lou and Bill set her straight.
And Weezy?  Who knows.
